'Billy Gilmour, my god' Andy Robertson sums up Chelsea star and Scotland's new hero

Overjoyed Andy Robertson has tipped Billy Gilmour to earn "as many caps as he wants" for Scotland after his all-conquering first start against England.

The national team skipper was exceptional in the 0-0 draw with the Auld Enemy at Wembley but he reserved special praise for the ice-cool 20-year-old making his competitive debut.

Their efforts open up the chance for Scotland to qualify for the knockout stages at a major tournament for the first time in their history if they can see off Croatia.

Chelsea kid Gilmour was exceptional as he showed his brilliance from the first minute until he was substituted in the 77th minute in the highly-anticipated Euro 2020 duel.

And grinning Robertson struggled to find the words to describe where Scotland's new hero ranks after he announced his arrival on the world stage

He said: "My God! He’s right up there. I spoke to him in the hotel today and just looked at him…

“Nothing fazes him, and that’s why I believe he can get as many caps as he wants for Scotland. "He’s got a huge future ahead of him but the here and now is pretty good as well.

“Today, having Callum McGregor as well, both of them in the holding role were magnificent."

And the bullish Liverpool star is certain his side's big display against England sets them up for a roller coaster final group game against Luka Modric and Co at Hampden.

Steve Clarke's side know a victory will likely seal a place in the last 16 of their first major tournament in 23 years.

He added: “It keeps us alive and it’s important we use this feeling, we use the fans being happy with us going into Tuesday.

“It’s important we use it to get a positive result to get out of this group."

The Three Lions faithful showered their side with boos at the final whistle after failing to break the deadlock.

English football will likely now launch a full post-mortem but Robertson wants his side to get their dues for keeping Harry Kane quiet.

He said: “Harry is one of those players you constantly have to keep a watch on.

“But you know, there were a few of them out there.

“Foden got substituted, he was quite quiet. Sterling, quite quiet.

“Our right hand side managed to keep them quiet.

“Credit to all the boys in there, a really good result but it’s important it’s not a pointless result - we need to use it to get out of this group.”
