Billy Gilmour in Chelsea Champions League glory as teenager joins illustrious Scots elite

Billy Gilmour has become the 32nd Scot to win the Champions League after Chelsea shocked Manchester City in Portugal.

The 19-year-old from Ardrossan was an unused sub as Thomas Tuchel's side edged out the Premier League champions 1-0 in a gripping showpiece on Saturday night.

But he'll still take home a winners' medal as Kai Havertz' first-half goal proved decisive at the Estadio do Dragao.

The German cut through the heart of City's defence with a surging run, rounded onrushing keeper Ederson and slotted into an empty net.

Gilmour, called up to the Scotland squad for Euro 2020, now joins a long list of Scots who have triumphed on Europe's biggest stage.

Andy Robertson was the last to lift the famous trophy, winning on his second final appearance with Liverpool in 2019.

Chelsea withstood a late siege from Pep Guardiola's team as they sought a first Champions League title in their first ever final.

But ultimately a tactically flawless Chelsea stood firm for the slenderest yet most glorious of victories.

It means former Rangers academy star Gilmour's name will be etched into the history books alongside the Lisbon Lions, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Alan Hansen, Darren Fletcher and Paul Lambert among others.
