Billy Gilmour heartache for Chelsea as ex-Rangers star misses penalty in costly Valencia defeat

There was disappointment for Scotland youth starlet Billy Gilmour on Tuesday, as he missed a penalty for Chelsea's under-19 side against Valencia - sending them crashing out of the UEFA Youth League.

Gilmour joined the Stamford Bridge youth ranks from Rangers two years ago, and has since gone from strength to strength in London.

He made his first team debut under Frank Lampard earlier this season, and has featured twice from the bench in the Premier League while earning two senior EFL Cup starts.

Far from an established first team star just yet, however, the bread and butter of his football still comes within the youth academy.

The young Blues, with Gilmour on the left of a midfield three, went on to lose by two goals to one, and will exit the competition at the group stage for the first time in their history.

Gilmour featured for 90 minutes, and had a later effort saved by Carlos Sanchez in the home side's goal, but it wasn't to be for the youngster.

Goals from Joseda and Jordi Escobar either side of a Henry Lawrence equaliser ultimately inflicted a second defeat of the campaign on Gilmour's side.

It leaves them on five points after five matches, and unable to catch either Ajax or Valencia.

Despite the European disappointment, Gilmour finds himself as a key part of a Chelsea reserve side who top Premier League 2, having registered a goal and three assists in seven matches in the competition.

With the UEFA Youth League running parallel to the senior Champions League , Chelsea's first team take on Valencia in Spain on Tuesday evening.
