Billy Gilmour handed new Chelsea shirt number ahead of 2020/21 Premier League campaign

Billy Gilmour has been given a squad number promotion after Michy Batshuayi's loan move from Chelsea to Crystal Palace.

With the Belgian moving across London, the young Scot has been handed the number 23 shirt, moving from the number 47.

The 19-year-old impressed last season in his breakthrough season in the first team, with two performances really standing out.

Before the season was suspended, Gilmour had two outstanding performances when he was put into the first team.

The youngster was named man of the match in both the FA Cup win over Liverpool and the Premier League victory against Everton.

He then started the Crystal Palace match over Jorginho when football returned, but he picked up a knee injury which required surgery.

"Billy Gilmour is obviously a longer-term injury, he'll be out for a couple months more after the operation he had," Lampard said in his press conference ahead of the Premier League game with Brighton & Hove Albion.

However, when he comes back into the squad, then he will have a new number to play in.

Batshuayi completed his season-long loan move to the Eagles this afternoon, having also signed a new one-year contract extension with the Blues.

However, the plan will be to sell the Belgian next summer on a permanent deal.
