Billy Gilmour handed first Chelsea competitive start in Carabao Cup clash

Billy Gilmour has been handed his first competitive top team start for Chelsea as his stunning season hits another new high.

The 18-year-old former Rangers youth will start for the Blues in the Carabao Cup clash with Grimsby Town at Stamford Bridge.

Gilmour has been selected in a midfield beside Ross Barkley and Christian Pulisic as Frank Lampard puts his faith in the youngster to hold his own in the engine room.

Scotland U21 ace Gilmour caught Lampard's eye in pre-season and was rewarded with a new contract earlier month.

Lampard's admiration for the playmaker was clear when he included him in Chelsea's Champions League squad.

And that was followed up with a first ever Premier League appearance for Gilmour when he came on as a second half substitute against Sheffield United.

Now he has reached another milestone as he makes his first start for the top team against League Two Grimsby in front of what is expected to be a big crowd at the Bridge.

Speaking after his Premier League debut and signing his new deal two weeks ago, Gilmour said: "It was amazing to make my debut and for the gaffer to show his trust in me in a tight game.

"A draw wasn’t the result we wanted but he showed his faith in me and I thank him for that. Now I need to make sure it wasn’t just a one-off and keep showing him I’ve got a lot more to give."
