Billy Gilmour freed from Norwich exile as Chelsea and Scotland star makes first appearance since September

Dean Smith has thrown his support behind Billy Gilmour to help claw Norwich up the table as the Scotland youngster starts his first game since September against Southampton.

Gilmour joined the Canaries on loan from Chelsea in the summer and was initially expected to play a key role at Carrow Road.

But Daniel Farke didn't favour him and after an early run in the team, he was sidelined for the final seven games of the German's tenure.

Despite barely featuring for his club, Gilmour has been a standout for Scotland and was integral to wins over Moldova and Denmark during the break.

And that sparkling form appears to have caught the eye of new Norwich boss Smith as he has been thrown in to start against Southampton.

He starts in midfield alongside Kenny McLean while Grant Hanley also features in the back line.

Norwich have just five points so far this season and sit adrift at the bottom of the Premier League table.

But there will be hope that Gilmour's return to the side can inspire a great escape.
