Billy Gilmour explains why Norwich City was best loan destination despite Rangers links

Billy Gilmour has spoken of his delight after completing a season-long loan move to Premier League new boys Norwich City.

The Chelsea midfielder was linked with a Rangers return after the Champions League winners announced he could leave for a loan spell.

Gilmour moved to Stamford Bridge from Ibrox and has caught the eye ever since his debut for Chelsea back in 2019.

The 20-year-old has made 22 appearances for Chelsea and was man of the match in a League Cup tie against Liverpool.

He capped his rise by making his full international debut for Scotland in their Euro 2020 goalless draw against England at Wembley before Covid ruled him out of the group stage decider against Croatia.

Despite the Gers link, Gilmour's desire to play minutes in the Premier League was enough to convince him to complete the move to the Canaries.

There will be plenty of opportunities for Gilmour to showcase his talents this season and will be a pivotal one to determine his progression into the first team at Chelsea.

He told the Norwich City club website: "I am very excited to be here, I can not wait for the season ahead.

"I have been looking forward to coming here, playing as much as possible and helping Norwich City compete in the Premier League.

"I spoke to the head coach [Daniel Farke]. He called me and we had a talk about how he wants to play and how he sees me fitting in.

"Everything he said was what I want to do on the pitch, get the ball down and play nice football. He spoke really highly of his team and I wanted to come here and help.”

There will be delight amongst Norwich City supporters - and team-mates with Scotland star Kenny McLean a key man at Canaries - that they have managed to secure the service of Gilmour for the upcoming season.

He will add a strong element of technical ability and already showcases he has the nous to take responsibility for his side when they need it the most.

Canaries boss Farke spoke of his delight at securing Gilmour’s services for the upcoming campaign.

He said: "We are really happy to have brought Billy in. We must say a big thank you to Chelsea for making this deal happen.

"We are delighted to bring Billy to the club because we have lost some important players in that area of the park."

Farke is no stranger to wanting to play a high tempo quick passing style of football.

He believes that Gilmour has all of the necessary skills needed to accommodate his style of football and is delighted to have signed the young Scot for the upcoming campaign.

He said: "He can help us a lot with his ability to link the play, his technical qualities and also his work against the ball.

"From a footballing point of view and also from his character he is a perfect fit to our squad, he will help us to achieve our targets.”
