Billy Gilmour earns rave Chelsea review as Scottish rising star named Frank Lampard's star man

Billy Gilmour has been singled out as the most impressive performer in Frank Lampard's first game as Chelsea boss.

The 18-year-old was handed his senior debut against Bohemians in the 1-1 draw and the former Rangers academy star turned heads during his 45-minute cameo in the second half.

Chelsea's young players know the time is now to break into the senior squad with the Blues currently serving a two-window transfer ban.

Lampard and assistant Jody Morris both played their role in developing Gilmour at youth level before they made the switch to Derby.

But their return to Stamford Bridge is good news for one of Scotland's brightest stars of his generation.

And the reviews are in for Gilmour.

Football London were in attendance for the season opener and their Chelsea correspondent Oliver Harbord reckons the midfielder was the pick of the second half substitutes, as he played in the middle alongside outcast Tiemoue Bakayoko.

He wrote: "A really sharp half from the young Scot, playing in the number 10 role and looking good from the beginning. Some lovely long-range passes and something that would have impressed Lampard."

Gilmour was also commended for his confidence and ability to stamp his authority on proceedings.

Chelsea face a decision over Gilmour in the coming weeks. Lampard rates the player highly but could view a loan move away from West London as best for the player's development.

But the Blues boss has shown he was willing to give youth a chance with Derby last season. Chelsea loanee Mason Mount and Jayden Bogle were a pair of teenagers who were given their chance to shine.

An exciting season awaits for Gilmour...wherever it may be.
