Billy Gilmour could follow in Mason Mount's footsteps as midfielder considers Chelsea future

Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour is set to consider a temporary exit from Stamford Bridge this summer, according to reports.

The Scottish youngster has been used sparingly by Blues boss Thomas Tuchel having fallen down the pecking order in west London.

He made just five appearances for the German as Chelsea lifted the UEFA Champions League and earned a place in the top four of the Premier League.

This was in contrast to his 17 outings under Frank Lampard during his tenure at Stamford Bridge, albeit having been ruled out injured with a knee injury for the vast majority of the opening months of the 2020/21 campaign.

He is now on the hunt for more first team football though, with The Scottish Sun reporting that he is set to consider a loan move away from Chelsea this season.

Highly rated at the west London club, it is thought that Gilmour could follow in the footsteps of current Blues’ player of the year Mason Mount and star for the first team after spells away from Chelsea with Vitesse Arnhem and Derby County.

The 19-year-old is also apparently set to use Euro 2020 as a potential route to a transfer.

Selected in the Scotland squad for the tournament, Gilmour is reportedly hoping to generate interest and suitors with a series of positive performances as Steve Clarke’s men aim to navigate a tough group that includes the likes of England, Croatia and the Czech Republic.

In all, the young midfielder has made 22 appearances for Chelsea so far in his fledgling career and has earned two caps for his country.

He is yet to score a goal in senior professional football.

Former Everton forward Steven Naismith has already suggested that Gilmour could certainly have an impact on Euro 2020.

He said: "Billy is an exceptional talent. He is somebody who has come into the international scene and made an impact in a short period of time.

"Not only that, he has gone into the part of the pitch where we have the most competition for places.

"I think he will get his chance in one of these games. He might need to wait and just build over this camp.”
