Billy Gilmour and the Chelsea teammate who has promised a kicking as he admits viral video wasn't his initial squad reaction

New Scotland squad star Billy Gilmour revealed one of his Chelsea team-mates has promised him a kicking before potentially meeting at this summer's Euros.

The former Rangers kid has come on leaps and bounds in the last two seasons, filling in for one of manager Thomas Tuchel's most trusted midfielders in Mateo Kovacic.

But with Kovacic's Croatia set to face Scotland in Group D at Hampden next month, he joked with Gilmour that he may experience some roughing up in the coming weeks.

Gilmour believes there's a chance national team manager Steve Clarke could deploy the uncapped playmaker at the tournament.

And the beaming teenager told BBC Scotland : "I'm just so excited and so proud.

"Mum and dad are really proud. My little brother, I had text messages from everyone, friends and family. They're all happy and saying they're going to try their best to get tickets.

"Everyone is buzzing - my phone was going mad with text messages. It was a good day.

"They all congratulated me. Then I was speaking to Kova and he said, 'You think you could play?'

Kovacic joked with Gilmour (PA)

"I said there's a chance, so he replied, 'Okay, I'll need to tell the boys to kick you.' So there's banter going on just now.

"They're in our group, so it will be good to see them, but hopefully we can beat them."

Scotland fans welled with pride when they saw a video posted by England's Ben Chilwell showing Gilmour reacting to his name being read out on TV as one of those bound for Euro 2020.

He admits that footage didn't actually capture his initial reaction - but it was more of an opportunity to let the honour sink in.

"I already knew," he said. "I got a text message to say congratulations, you have made the squad, an hour before that.

"I wanted to watch the build-up, to see my name on the screen. I was so proud. It made me even happier just sitting there knowing I'm going to be part of it.

"For the country, it's a massive thing. We've not qualified for a major tournament for so long."
