Billy Corgan’s stolen guitar makes its way back to him 27 years later

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has been reunited with a beloved guitar that was stolen 27 years ago in Detroit, the musician told Rolling Stone.

“I always felt the guitar would come back,” Corgan told Rolling Stone. “And I know that sounds strange, but today didn’t surprise me. I always felt the guitar would come back when it was time.”

The report said the band had just finished a June 1992 show at Saint Andrew’s Hall in Detroit when a friend who was acting as a roadie told him, “Somebody just walked out the back door with your guitar.” Corgan filed a police report and offered a $10,000 reward.

But the 1970s Fender Stratocaster wouldn’t be back in Corgan’s hands until this week, thanks to Flushing, Michigan, resident Beth James.

James bought the instrument for $200 several years ago at a Detroit yard sale, according to the report. A friend of hers recognized it from an article she read online about Corgan’s missing guitar.

A reunion was arranged.

Rolling Stone said Corgan is in the studio writing new music for a follow-up to 2018’s “Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun.”

“I’m literally gonna take it somewhere, and get it fixed up,” he told Rolling Stone. “And I’ll start using it. It’s a really valuable guitar to me. And I mean, the timing is sort of strange, and auspicious, and so I take it as a sign that it’s supposed to be part of what we’re doing.”
