Billy Connolly treating Parkinson’s disease the way he dealt with hecklers at stand-up shows

Billy Connolly says he treats his Parkinson’s disease the way he used to deal with hecklers at stand-up shows – by staring at his arm until it stops shaking.

Connolly was diagnosed with the illness in 2013 and retired from live shows five years later.

He said: “I’ve learnt to hypnotise my hand. I glare at it and it kinda quivers.

“I just stare at it and eventually it stops. It’s quite a good trick. We love it.”

Connolly previously told how he could no longer play the banjo and now the twitching of his body has stopped another of his favourite pastimes.

He told Radio Times: “I loved writing letters, but now my writing is illegible. My collection of fountain pens and ink is redundant. It’s a pain in the bum.”

On Parkinson’s he added: “You confront it by saying ‘Bugger off, I’m going to get on with my life.’”

He is on ITV at Christmas with Billy Connolly: My Absolute Pleasure – a selection of his most loved stand-up routines.
