Billy Connolly's former Humblebums bandmate Tam Harvey dies as fans pay tribute

Tam Harvey, Billy Connolly's former bandmate from The Humblebums, has sadly died.

Harvey's daughter Georgiana Mannion took to Twitter around 2am this morning, Sunday December 19, to reveal her father had passed away just hours before.

Telling followers the sad news, Georgiana shared an image of the group's first album, featuring both her father and Connolly on the cover.

She said: “My father died a few hours ago.

“Here is in his hey day on the right, Tam Harvey. He started a band with Billy Connolly called The Humblebums. Taught him guitar.

“He was one of the best guitarists/stringed instruments players from the UK.”

Connolly and Harvey co-founded the folk rock band in 1965 and were soon well know to revellers in Glasgow's pubs and clubs.

After forming, the pair were often seen at the Old Scotia Bar in the city centre, where the Big Yin would entertain audiences with his funny song introductions.

The Humblebums went on to release their first album, First Collection of Merry Melodies, in 1969 under the Transatlantic Records label.

Late singer Gerry Rafferty also joined the band when Harvey, who was an accomplished bluegrass guitarist, left the group.

The remaining pair then eventually broke up in the early 1970s.

Following the news of his passing, tributes soon started flooding in for Harvey on social media.

Twitter user Dòmhnall wrote: "Just finished reading Billy Connolly's autobiography, and he talks extensively about your father's great talent.

"So sorry for your loss."

While Lynne MacFadyen commented: "I saw the Humblebums perform in Glasgow. Absolutely fabulous.

"You must be very proud and very heartbroken tonight."

And Willie Eckerslike added: "Sorry to hear, Tam was part of Scotland's music DNA."
