Billy Connolly removed 'from the books' at Catholic primary after religious jokes

Billy Connolly has revealed that the Glasgow primary school he attended wiped his name from the books due to the religious subject matter of his stand-up comedy.

The Big Yin made the revelation in a clip shared by BBC Scotland from his new series 'Billy and Us', which begins tonight at 10pm on the channel.

Speaking about his childhood Billy said: "I went to St Peters' Girls' School until I was six. The infants at the Catholic school went to the Girls' School first.

"I went back to St Peters' to learn that they had removed my name from the books because I had been doing the religious stuff, 'The Last Supper' and 'Crucifixion'."

The school in question, St Peters' Girls' and Infants' Primary School, was located in Dowanhill in the west end of the city.

Billy found fame via the Crucifixion stand up routine, which was based around the idea that Jesus was born in the Gallowgate as opposed to Galilee - with the Last Supper being a night out in the Saracen Head.

As part of the new series, the BBC will screen classic shows featuring the Big Yin in the coming days, including Who Do You Think You Are?, Down Among The Big Boys and the BAFTA Tribute to Billy Connolly.

Further programming in the season will be announced in the schedules shortly.
