Billy Butler discharged from hospital after heart surgery

Liverpool radio legend Billy Butler was admitted to hospital just before Christmas to be treated for a heart condition.

His son Lee Butler revealed the news on social media, alongside a picture of Billy, who will celebrate his 80th birthday later this month.

The veteran broadcaster was famous among other things for his radio phone-in quiz show, Hold Your Plums.

The post by Lee Butler read: "Thank you all the staff nurses, doctors and surgeons at Broadgreen Hospital for the amazing care they have given my dad.

"He was taken in before Xmas due to his heart. He has now had his Trancatheter aortic valve implantation & is home. Hold ya plums dad - Love ya x"

Trancatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI for short) is a minimally invasive procedure carried out at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital located within the Broadgreen site.

It involves a new valve being inserted without removing the old, damaged valve.

Billy marked his 50th anniversary on air last October. He began his career in guest slots on Radio Merseyside in 1971 and soon become a favourite among listeners across Merseyside and beyond.

Billy, who lives in New Brighton said at the time: "People have always known I'm approachable, and now obviously because I'm getting on, I'm getting a lot of people coming up to me who say 'my mam used to always have you on, whenever I think of your name I think of Sunday afternoon dinner and Hold Your Plums.

"I've gone through the ages, it started off with people saying 'my mum listens to you' then it became 'my gran listens to you' then my late mum, my late gran, it's been passed down through the family."

In 2018, Billy received the devastating news his contract would not be renewed at Radio Merseyside for his long-running weekday afternoon show, which caused a storm of controversy among his many loyal listeners.

However in 2020, he returned to broadcasting, with a regular weekend slot on the digital-only platform Liverpool Live Radio.
