Billy Beane's comments about Liverpool as Moneyball mogul in talks to help run club

Billy Beane’s connection to Liverpool runs deep as his comments from the summer show.

The man behind the Moneyball movement, a data-driven system that changed the sporting world, is co-chair of RedBall who are trying to negotiate a £6billion investment deal of the Anfield side.

Currently sitting as executive vice president of MLB side Oakland Athletics, a merger with John Henry’s FSG - owners of the Boston Red Sox – would be seen as a conflict of interest, leading him to leave his position at the As.

A report from the Wall Street Journal has suggested that Beane is unlikely to join in the operations of the Red Sox, with a move to Anfield a more likely one at this stage.

Billy Beane's potential deal with Liverpool would see him move to a club he has been a long-time admirer of (2019 Michael Zagaris)

But Beane’s move to the footballing side of the business would be one where he joins a favoured side.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo's Blood Red: The Liverpool FC Podcast in July, Beane said: “I was a Tottenham fan at the outset because former Liverpool sporting director, Damien Comolli, was one of the first men in football I met.

“He is a Spurs fan and a long-time friend, so that’s why I started with Spurs.

“When John Henry and Tom Werner, long-time friends, bought Liverpool back in 2010 and Damien was there, it was really easy to root for Liverpool.

“It’s also easy now because of my association with John and Tom, and the way they do their business.

“It’s an amazingly well-run football club, it’s a fun team to watch and a great manager.

“It incorporates everything you’d want in a successful sports team, so they’re easy to root for.”

Neither party have yet confirmed the claims and while talks are ongoing, any official deal is still a way away.

Keane has been with the A’s since 1989, becoming the General Manager in 1997. He has rose to prominence for his use of the “Moneyball” tactic that uses data driven evaluations and analysis to spot players that may be overlooked elsewhere.

Liverpool owner John Henry tried to lure Beane to the Red Sox back in 2002, but despite a lucrative offer, he remained with the Athletics.

Beane has since developed a passion for football, owning a stake in Eredivise said AZ Alkmaar, as well as being part of the consortium that owns Barnsley.

RedBall’s investment deal would see them take a 25 per-cent stake in a merger with FSG, valued at more than £6bn.
