Billionaire gives away £7million to random strangers in 'social experiment'

A billionaire fashion tycoon is set to give away nearly £7 million to random Twitter users - describing it as a "social experiment".

Yusaku Maezawa, Japan's 22nd richest man, plans to share 1 billion yen between 1,000 lucky winners.

He has already hit the headlines this week, appealing for a girlfriend to join him for a trip to the Moon .

The cash winners will be notified this week by direct message on the social network.

Mr Maezawa, 44, who founded online fashion chain Zozotown, believes that all citizens should be given regular guaranteed cash sums - which he thinks will increase productivity, Vox reports .

The only thing winners will be required to do is fill out a follow-up survey on how the money has impacted their lives.

He asked on Twitter: "Will people’s lives and labor productivity improve when given Bi-like income or temporary benefits?”

And he hopes it will catch on, with other billionaires following suit.

Mr Maezawa asked: "Are there any groups or people, not just in Japan but anywhere in the world, who would like to try a similar experiment within their communities/region? Who would like to try and change their society too?”

On January 1 he told Twitter users they would qualify for a share of his fortune if they retweeted him and followed him.

Mr Maezawa is due to fly around the moon in 2023 as the first private passenger with Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

He wrote: “As feelings of loneliness and emptiness slowly begin to surge upon me, there's one thing that I think about: continuing to love one woman.

"I want to find a 'life partner'. With that future partner of mine, I want to shout our love and world peace from outer space.”
