Billionaire Dermot Desmond slams plans to build 'Ballymun Towers South Dublin' at D4 site

Businessman Dermot Desmond slammed plans to build 611 apartments on land in Dublin 4 formerly owned by RTE saying they could become "modern-day slums".

The billionaire has threatened to use his "resources" to fight fast-track planning laws "all the way to the European courts" in a bid to prevent a development that he said could become "Ballymun Towers South Dublin".

Desmond, who is one of the richest men in the country, made the claims in a letter written to local politicians, reports the Irish Independent.

The mega-rich financier owns a property at nearby Ailesbury Road.

He also blasted Strategic Housing Development legislation in the letter addressed to Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy and other local reps, say it has "compromised" the planning system.

Desmond's wife Pat and two other residents of the plush street have already launched a legal challenge against the SHD laws in the High Court.

Plans for the €107.5m development were submitted to An Bord Pleanala by Cairn Homes in 2017.

Blocks in the project will range from four to ten storeys which Desmond says are "totally unsuitable to the area".

In the letter he writes the apartments will be: "Higher than the density of Ballymun Towers North Dublin, built in the 1960s to accommodate a housing crisis and subsequently demolished and replaced by low-rise homes."

And he added that with more people working from home "there will be no need for these skyscrapers, which will become modern-day slums".

Cairn Homes said:  "The planning process we adhere to is managed by local authorities and An Bord Pleanala in a rigorously independent manner consistent with the Government's National Development Plan."

The company added it couldn't make any further comment as the planning application had been formally lodged.
