Billingham has introduced the Icon Messenger Bag, a new everyday carry option inspired by the timeless appearance of its much-loved Hadley range. Designed for commuting, travelling and carrying daily essentials, the new bag combines the British manufacturer’s traditional styling and craftsmanship with the practical features expected from a modern messenger bag.
Although Billingham is positioning the Icon primarily as an everyday messenger rather than a dedicated camera bag, there is nothing stopping photographers from turning it into a discreet mobile shooting solution. Add a suitable protective pouch or Billingham’s optional Capsule 1 insert, and there is enough room for anything from a premium compact camera to a Leica M and small lens, while still leaving space for the everyday items you need. Billingham specifically recommends the Capsule 1 for carrying camera equipment inside the Icon without taking over the entire bag.
The Icon also includes a full-width internal pocket capable of holding a laptop measuring up to 14 inches, although Billingham recommends placing the computer inside its own protective case. Alternatively, that space should comfortably accommodate an iPad or another tablet, making the Icon a tempting choice for photographers who want to shoot, transfer and edit their images while away from home.
Elsewhere, the bag features a dedicated internal bottle holder, multiple internal slip and mesh pockets, a wide zipped rear pocket and a traditional brass key loop. There is also a discreet compartment for hiding an Apple AirTag, while the luggage retainer strap allows the bag to slide over the handle of a suitcase when travelling. The removable H1 shoulder sling and included SP50 shoulder pad should also make it comfortable to carry during longer days on the move.
The Icon Messenger Bag has a 12-litre internal capacity and is available in several of the company’s familiar canvas, FibreNyte and leather combinations. It is priced at $377 / £330, placing it firmly within premium messenger bag territory, but its ability to carry a compact camera setup alongside a laptop or tablet could make it the perfect mobile solution for photographers who want to shoot and edit on the go without carrying an obvious camera bag.
