Billie Eilish surprised by six Grammy nominations for one song

Billie Eilish looks focused.

Billie Eilish, the talented 22-year-old singer, has found herself up for six awards at the 66th annual Grammys, and it's safe to say that this recognition came as a surprise. Eilish had actually planned to take most of 2023 off and was not expecting such a whirlwind of nominations.

Eilish, along with her brother Finneas O'Connell, received a total of six nods for their chart-topping hit from the Barbie soundtrack, 'What Was I Made For?' This song has already secured the award for best song written for visual media, which in itself is a remarkable achievement.

In an interview with Amanda Kloots and Alina Vission during the GRAMMY Live! from the Red Carpet pre-show, Eilish expressed her astonishment at the number of nominations they received for just one track. She said, 'We put one song out this whole year. And did not think it would get — maybe one, even, let alone six. Which is really, really crazy.' Eilish and her brother's intention was to have a relatively quiet year, with no album releases or major projects. The plan was to simply release one song and take a break.

Eilish humbly acknowledged the nominations, which include record of the year, song of the year, best pop solo performance, best song written for visual media, and best music video. She described the experience as 'insane' and 'surreal,' recognizing the magnitude of being recognized for their work.

Kloots praised Eilish and Finneas for capturing the essence of Barbie in their song. Finneas explained, 'That movie was so meaningful to the two of us, and we loved it so much. The honor of writing something to participate in it was like immense for us.' He continued, revealing their excitement about being a part of the 'Barbie entourage,' and how it has been a fun experience.

Interestingly, 'What Was I Made For?' has garnered even more acclaim, earning a nomination at the Academy Awards this year for Best Original Song. This comes just two years after the duo won their first-ever Oscar in 2022 for the James Bond film, 'No Time to Die.'

Furthermore, their success extended to the Golden Globe Awards as well, where they secured another win for the song. The recognition and accolades Eilish and Finneas have received for their contributions to the world of music and film underscore their immense talent and ability to create captivating and significant work.

As the 66th annual Grammy Awards unfold live at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, it's clear that Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell have established themselves as forces to be reckoned with in the music industry. Their ability to create impactful music that resonates with audiences has not gone unnoticed, and it will be exciting to see what the future holds for this dynamic duo.
