Billie Eilish has hit back at online criticism over photos of her at this year’s Met Gala pointing out she wasn’t even there.
The annual fashion extravaganza took place on May 5, and while Eilish, 23, has been a standout at previous galas (even becoming the youngest-ever co-chair at 19 in 2021), she gave this year’s event a miss due to her ongoing world tour.
That didn’t stop artificial intelligence from putting her there however — or some fans from falling for it.
The What Was I Made For? singer is currently in the midst of her Hit Me Hard and Soft world tour and was performing in Amsterdam at the Ziggo Dome on May 4 and 5, with another concert scheduled for May 7. Logistically, it would have been near impossible for her to jet to New York and zip back to Europe in time.
Still, AI-generated images of Eilish at the Met Gala quickly began circulating online, drawing both attention and criticism for her supposed look.
Billie Eilish reacts to people trashing her Met Gala outfit this year, which was AI-generated as she wasn’t there:

“Seeing people talk about what I wore to this year’s Met Gala being trash… I wasn’t there. That’s AI. I had a show in Europe that night… let me be!” pic.twitter.com/z9Rj4QEAKQ
Fed up, Eilish took to Instagram Stories to set the record straight.
“Seeing people talk about what I wore to this year’s Met Gala ‘being trash.’ I wasn’t there!” she said in a video shared online on Wednesday. “That’s AI. I had a show in Europe that night. Let me be! I wasn’t even there!”
Eilish isn’t the only celebrity to be virtually inserted into the Met Gala through AI. Katy Perry, 40, has also fallen victim to AI trickery — twice.
Fake images of the Roar singer recently made the rounds again for the second year in a row, prompting Perry to respond on social media.
“Couldn’t make it to the MET, I’m on The Lifetimes Tour (see you in Houston tomorrow IR),” she posted alongside the AI-generated pics. “P.S. This year I was actually with my mom so she’s safe from the bots — but I’m praying for the rest of y’all.”

Just to clarify: pictures of Perry in space? Real. At the Met Gala? Not so much.
During one of her shows in Chicago on Monday, she spoke out on the incessant online trolling she has received, seemingly stemming from her participation in Jeff Bezo's Blue Origin flight in April.
In a video shared online by a fan, the sold out crowd can be heard cheering for her for an extended period of time.
“Well, I thought I was the most hated person on the internet," she said.
"I think that's false," she added, while the audience continued to audibly praise her.
