Australian surf brand Billabong has been a fixture of coastal life for decades, regularly intersecting with art, fashion and surf culture. It regularly collaborates with Aussie artists, and one of its most consistent creative partnerships has been with Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung surfer and artist Otis Carey, whose annual collaborations continue to blur the line between surfwear and contemporary Indigenous art.
These guys are no stranger to one another, as the 2026 collection marks their ninth annual collaboration. Every year, Billabong and Otis Carey get together and design a range that’ll help start a conversation surrounding culture and country for Aussie surfers. It’s one of the brand’s most anticipated drops every single year.
And this time, it looks a little different.
While Otis’ work always pays homage to his culture’s rich ancestry, his Mangrove Jack collection sets a more playful tone, interweaving motifs of mangrove red snappers (in the red, yellow and black of the Aboriginal flag) and camo.
“I just love going fishing, walking the bank. And mangrove jack fishing’s one of my favorite types to fish to target,” Otis said.
“The concept behind the camo is in regards to that; how they’re really elusive and they sort of hide. They’ll sit up under brush and under logs and crevices, and they’ll just come out and smash your lure.”
Otis wove the red, black and yellow into the camo print as well, flipping the script on what camo is “meant” to look like. Instead of blending in, this camo is meant to stand out: a playful subversion of a print traditionally associated with hiding, turning it into something expressive, cultural and fashion-forward.
Otis’ collection with Billabong isn’t reserved for surfers. He wanted to design a range of apparel that could be worn every day, whether you’re having a casual or active day out.
“I just wanted to do a range where there’s a bit of fishing gear and a bit of your regular sort of clothing,” Otis said.
