A co-writer on Bill & Ted Face the Music has disputed a claim that the sequel will be too “woke” due to its inclusion of two female characters.
Ed Solomon, who is co-writing the film with Chris Matheson, discussed the topic on Twitter on Friday after one of the platform’s users claimed the movie would turn out to be ”a woke piece of trash”.
Solomon asked the Twitter user where that impression was coming from, to which the Twitter user responded: “The two girls you’ve cast.”
That was an apparent reference to the characters of Bill and Ted’s daughters, who will be featured in the sequel.
That person then claimed that the film’s writers chose to give Bill and Ted daughters instead of sons “to fulfil an agenda”.
“I know you feel that. There’s no agenda – and we made them girls WAY before it was socially a thing,” Solomon wrote back.
“But you’ll believe what you need to believe. I get it. Your facts are way off, though. They’re supporting characters.”
Bill & Ted Face the Music is the third instalment in the Bill & Ted franchise.
It is scheduled for release on 21 August.
Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, who are reprising their respective roles, confirmed in March last year that a third movie was in the works.
William Sadler is returning as the Grim Reaper. Brigette Lundy-Paine will star as Ted’s daughter, while Samara Weaving will play Bill’s.
