Bill O’Brien praises Texans QB Joe Webb after 28-26 loss to the Packers

Third-string quarterback Joe Webb took every snap for the Houston Texans in their 28-26 loss to the Green Bay Packers Thursday night at Lambeau Field.

Due to second-string quarterback A.J. McCarron suffering an injury to the thumb on his throwing hand, and franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson not needing any opening preseason action, Webb played a full game.

Coach Bill O’Brien was complementary of Webb after the game.

“Joe is really what we we’re looking for in a Houston Texan,” O’Brien said via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Webb completed 25 passes on 40 attempts for 286 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. He also ran six times for 47 yards, and threw a few blocks on the edge for running backs.

How Webb epitomizes what the Texans are looking for in a player is his willingness to play special teams, receiver, or anything the team is looking for. In the opening preseason game, the club was looking for a full-time quarterback, even though they had just signed undrafted rookie Jordan Ta’amu on Wednesday.

While Webb may be what the Texans are looking for in terms of heart, having the former 2010 sixth-round pick play a whole game can’t be a winning formula for Houston, even though O’Brien did manage to squeeze a 9-7 record and AFC South title out of the likes of Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett, T.J. Yates, and Brandon Weeden in 2015.
