Bill O’Brien: Fixing Texans’ penalty woes happens in practice

On Sunday, the Houston Texans lost 30-23 to the Indianapolis Colts. In doing so, they shot themselves in the foot on multiple instances, tallying 10 penalties for 54 yards on the day. They lost three third-down stops on defensive due to them.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien sees an answer to their penalty problem: the practice field.

“I think a lot of that has to happen on the practice field. We’ve got to be demanding of each other,” said O’Brien on Monday. “The play comes in correctly, the guys understand what their jobs are and we’re all in it together.”

The Texans are the third-most penalized team in the NFL, as they’ve seen yellow flags go the opposers’ way 57 times for a total of 475 yards.

“We’ve all got to get it corrected and try to decrease the amount of mistakes we’re making,” said O’Brien.

The Texans will begin their quest to decreasing penalties in the week heading into Sunday’s matchup with the Oakland Raiders, the league’s 16th-most penalized team.
