Bill de Blasio has back-tracked on his favourite bagel order after his original tweet was met with widespread criticism.
On Wednesday, the New York City mayor tweeted: “New York City has the best bagels in the world. But our BEST bagel?
“Bagel Hole in Park Slope. No contest. Don’t get there as much as I used to, but it was our go-to when the kids needed a bite before Little League.
“Whole wheat. Toasted. Extra cream cheese. #NationalBagelDay.”
However, shortly after sharing his bagel opinion, de Blasio deleted his tweet - after it was pointed out on social media that Bagel Hole doesn’t toast its bagels, and reportedly does not even own a toaster.
“I just talked to the assistant manager of Bagel Hole, who explained to me they don’t toast bagels because: ‘We bake them here and they’re already hot… it’s the old fashioned way,’” New York Post reporter Julia Marsh tweeted.
The New York Times food critic Pete Wells also weighed in, writing on Twitter: “It’s like saying the go-to order at your favourite slice joint is cauliflower, hold the cheese.”
Wells then dubbed the incident “toastergate,” while others labelled it “bagelgate”.
Following the controversy, de Blasio attempted to share his bagel order again - this time tweeting the same tweet without mentioning the “toasted” aspect of the bagel order, to the amusement of people on the internet.
Despite the backlash, the mayor appeared to take the criticism well. In response to a tweet declaring it was “breaking news” that de Blasio had again tweeted the bagel order, he responded: “What can I say, I must have a hole in my memory.”
This is not the first time de Blasio’s food opinions have prompted disapproval. In 2014, de Blasio was widely mocked after he was photographed eating pizza with a knife and fork.
