- Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has tabled a bill that would prevent mayors from simultaneously serving as Members of Parliament.
- The proposed legislation is viewed by some as an attempt to block the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, from returning to parliament and potentially making a future bid for the Labour leadership.
- The English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill would prevent mayors from following a path similar to Boris Johnson, who served as an MP while Mayor of London.
- Ms Rayner's department stated the change aims to ensure mayors focus entirely on their significant roles in leading their cities, aligning the rule with existing regulations for police and crime commissioners.
- Despite the speculation, Mr Khan has denied any interest in becoming Labour leader or returning to the Commons, and Ms Rayner has also repeatedly stated she does not wish to be party leader.
