Bill Callahan talks about the pace of Dwayne Haskins’ development

The growing pains for Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins continued Thursday night when he briefly got in the loss against the Minnesota Vikings.

Redskins interim head coach Bill Callahan has since talked a bit about the struggles and says this is all about the long-term process.

“Those are growing pains. You can’t pinpoint one specific thing. I wish I could, I wish I could say it’s this or it’s that. It’s just a whole experience,” Callahan said, according to JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington. “There’s something new every day that is going to come up for a rookie quarterback. The game is pretty complex.”

Haskins threw an interception over the course of five attempts on the night, clearly not getting enough time to step up into his throw and deliver the ball on the one that was picked.

Looking ahead, the plan continues to be Case Keenum under center if he’s healthy enough. And while whispers about Jay Gruden and the overall coaching staff being right about Haksins not being ready grow with each mistake, these are important reps.

Haskins will eventually see more of the field and surely make more mistakes. But the important reps and learning miscues are better off coming in what is already a lost season, even if coaches won’t say that out loud.
