Bill Callahan takes over as head coach under ironic circumstances in Washington

Following the news that the Washington Redskins fired head coach Jay Gruden early on Monday morning, it was announced that Bill Callahan, the offensive line coach, would be named the interim coach in Washington.

Callahan started his coaching career back in 1980 as an assistant at the University of Illinois, and he’s served as a head coach at the University of Nebraska, and briefly for the Oakland Raiders, as well.

Ironically, the situation that saw him become the top guy in Oakland is eerily similar to the circumstances he’s now seeing in Washington, as well.

It is unlikely that Callahan will ever have the interim tag removed from his title in Washington unless the Redskins should do a 180 on this season and somehow make it to the playoffs. That’s probably not going to happen. Still, it’s strange to see a coach benefit so greatly from the misfortunes of a pair of brothers. Don’t be surprised to hear that the Grudens are high-up on Callahan’s Christmas Card List this year.
