Bill Callahan singles out Troy Apke with praise

Even in a lost season, unexpected depth is never a bad thing.

The Washington Redskins appear to have found some in the form of safety Troy Apke, a fourth-round pick from 2018.

Interim coach Bill Callahan noted it is Apke who has emerged with Montae Nicholson out of the lineup, per Kyle Stackpole of Redskins.com: “Callahan said S Troy Apke has been playing ‘really well’ in the absence of Montae Nicholson. Highlighted Apke’s range and communication.”

Apke doesn’t pop out in a big way on the stat sheet with 19 total tackles and one interception. But this latest round of praise and his overall sound play is a welcome surprise for a guy originally viewed as an athletic prospect who could take a long time to develop.

But that simply hasn’t been the case this year when Apke has been able to crack the lineup, especially on a third-and-goal stop near the endzone against Buffalo.

If nothing else, it’s little details like this that make a one-win season in November worthwhile.
