The Bill Callahan era is starting on Wednesday in D.C., and according to some reporters on the ground, there is a new energy in the building.
While the media won’t be able to watch part of practice until this afternoon, NBC Sports Wahington’s JP Finlay noted on Wednesday morning that Callahan, the interim head coach, is “laying the law down” at practice already.
After Jay Gruden was let go earlier in the week, Callahan said that in the interim, he would try to increase the emphasis on the running game, and try to jump-start the offense by getting Adrian Peterson back into the mix more. So far, the Redskins have been gaining just 68.8 yards per game on the ground, which is ranked 27th in the league. Though they are without second-year back Derrius Guice, AP proved in 2018 that he is highly capable of filling in after rushing for over 1,000 yards last year.
It will take a week or two to see if the outlook of the Redskins picks up any at all, but the reports of Callahan preaching accountability is a positive sign. It may not be enough to build a winning team, but it can start to shift the culture if nothing else.
