Bill Belichick could spend more time coaching in the NFL than he previously thought.
The New England Patriots head coach said during “A Football Life” documentary in 2009 that he wouldn’t be one of those guys coaching into his 70s.
“I won’t be like Marv Levy and coaching in my 70s, I know that.”
He’s 67 years old now and seems to be comfortable with the coaching gig. He’s won six Super Bowls in the past two decades with the Patriots and he continues to bring energy to his team. Belichick talked about his future on Monday during an interview with WEEI, and didn’t rule out the idea of coaching into his 70s.
“When I said it, maybe I didn’t know what 70 felt like,” Belichick said. “So not really sure if that’s an accurate statement.”
Belichick would need to coach until he’s 73 to become the oldest coach in NFL history. Currently, he seems healthy and motivated enough to accomplish this task. Pete Carrol is still coaching right now and he’s seven months older than Belichick, so he could also make an attempt at it.
After defeating the Cleveland Browns in Week 8, Belichick became the third NFL coach to win 300 games. He’s behind Chicago Bears coach George Halas (324), and Baltimore Colts and Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula (347). He’s arguably the greatest NFL coach ever and is on par for a Super Bowl appearance No. 10 with the Patriots.
Belichick doesn’t need anything else on his resume to make his case for the greatest NFL coach ever, but it would just be another incredible accolade to achieve if he played into his 70s.
