Bill Belichick reacts to Texans’ pursuit of Nick Caserio

Coach Bill Belichick doesn’t seem to be holding a grudge against the Texans or Nick Caserio after the New England Patriots filed tampering charges against Houston this offseason.

The Texans were deeply interested in hiring Caserio, the Patriots director of player personnel, as their next general manager, but New England brought that process to a halt with their tampering filing.

“That’s water under the bridge,” Belichick said Thursday while meeting with reporters at Gillette Stadium before the first training camp practice.

The Texans may again pursue Caserio, as they did not name a general manager for the 2019 season and his contract expires after this season.

During the press conference on Thursday, Belichick wouldn’t disclose Caserio’s position with the Patriots, nor would he say whether Caserio has power to make rostering decisions. Belichick was also vague about whether Caserio received a promotion. Belichick did say Caserio’s role would be different, just like Belichick’s would be — and everyone else’s job on the team would be different.

If Caserio does have power to make roster decisions, the Patriots could block teams — like the Texans — from attempting to interviewing him in the future.

“Nick helps in a lot of ways,” Belichick said. “He has a lot of experience. I’m sure he does much more than any other personnel person in the league because of his coaching responsibilities. … He’s an asset in a lot of ways.”
