Bill Belichick dropped ‘day by day’ a dozen times while refusing to answer Mac Jones injury questions

Bill Belichick hates getting into specifics about his players’ injuries during press conference. He does, apparently, love the 1971 hit Broadway musical Godspell, because he couldn’t stop name-dropping the most popular song from its soundtrack Wednesday.

“Day-by-day” is Belichick’s new “we’re on to Cincinnati” when it comes to coaching soundbytes. He dropped that phrase no fewer than a dozen times in his mid-week press conference while deflecting questions about the reported ankle sprain that threatens to force quarterback Mac Jones out of the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

Here’s a full accounting, told by a grinning Belichick — who also assured the media he is not, in fact, the world’s most homeless-looking doctor — and recapped by Rhode Island-based reporter Nick Coit:

A roomful of reporters, fully aware of Belichick’s press conference past, fully knew they weren’t going to crack that facade but also knew they had to try anyway. Will Jones play in Week 4 against the Packers? Reports suggest he won’t, but the cagey head coach isn’t about to let on. He can’t see the future, you know. He’s just gotta take these things as they happen.

You know, one day at a time.

Arrrrggggh wait no I messed that up how do I delete–
