Bill Belichick comments on decision to bench Mac Jones vs Cowboys

Monday’s radio rounds hasn’t sounded like a changing of the guard at quarterback for the New England Patriots. In fact, coach Bill Belichick is showing support for quarterback Mac Jones, even after benching him on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Jones had what some might consider his worst game as a Patriot after going 12-of-21 passing for 150 yards, two interceptions and a fumble. Two of his turnovers were returned for touchdowns in a 38-3 blowout loss in Dallas.

“Everything gets highlighted by one or two plays one way or another, but in general, I think he makes pretty good decisions,” said Belichick. “He sees things well. But obviously as a team, we can’t win turning the ball over three times—two for touchdowns. We’ve got to do a better job of that. That’s everybody’s responsibility, and the quarterback is part of it. So is everybody else.”

The good news for Jones is the offense didn’t look any better with Bailey Zappe under center. For Patriots fans, however, that’s bad news because it leaves little hope of real change.

If anything, it doubles down on the phrase written on the back of the hoodies hanging in the locker of every Patriots player, “No one is coming; it’s up to us.”
