Biker killed after mistake at driving centre while taking his test

A biker died after crashing into a metal fence while trying to perform an emergency stop at a driving test centre, an inquest heard.

Christopher Evans was taking his test at the Navigation Road HQ in the Pocket Nook area of St Helens on March 11, this year, when the tragedy happened.

The examiner asked his to perform an emergency stop, but instead of braking, he appeared to accelerate, St Helens Coroner's Court was told.

The 39-year-old collided with a metal fence.

Paramedics rushed to the scene, but Mr Evans, from Chester was later pronounced dead.

A statement, at the inquest's opening, read out by coroner’s officer Jaqueline Horner, said: "During the test, he was requested to perform an emergency stop.

"During this process, witnesses state it appeared to them he had in fact accelerated instead of braking.

"He collided with the metal fencing around the perimeter of the test centre, before then colliding with a brick wall of a premises, next to the test centre.

"He was treated at the site by emergency services but was declared dead at the scene."

Mr Evans, a shift manager at a cranes operation firm, was married to Joanne, 34.

Following the tragedy, flowers were tied to a fence near the test centre.

One showed a picture of the man posing with Everton shirts in the background. A note read: "RIP Big Chris."

Coroner Graham Jackson recorded a verdict of accidental death.
