Biker jailed after catapulting vulnerable woman into the air in Leeds hit and run

An unlicensed driver who seriously injured a vulnerable woman when he hit her as she crossed a road with her grandmother has been jailed.

Patrick King was riding a stolen motorcycle without headlights on and speeding when he hit the victim and catapulted her into the air.

The 28-year-old dad then ran away from the scene and left the victim, who has learning difficulties, laying on York Road in Seacroft, Leeds.

A court heard she suffered multiple broken bones and a brain hemorrhage and the accident has had a lasting psychological effect on her.

Prosecutor Michael Morley said the 29-year-old victim and her grandmother were crossing the road outside Seacroft Grange Care Village at 6pm on December 11 last year.

A Mercedes driver who saw King on the motorcycle further down the road noticed the lights were not on and tried to alert him.

The witness estimated King was travelling at around 40mph on the 30mph road.

The victim's grandmother made it to the other side of the road but the motorcycle struck the victim, sending her flying into the air.

King was knocked off his bike but got up, threw his helmet on the ground and ran off up an embankment, losing a shoe as he went.

An ambulance was called and the victim was taken to hospital where she required immediate treatment.

Leeds Crown Court was told the victim suffered a hemorrhage on the left side of her brain, bruises on her lungs, and multiple broken bones including ribs.

Mr Morley said the bike had been stolen the month before the accident.

Police attended King's home in Kendal Drive, Halton, Leeds, the next morning and found him laying on the sofa under a duvet.

He said to the officers: "I don't care about me - is she alright?"

King had to be taken to hospital before he could be interviewed.

In his police interview, King claimed he was being chased by an Audi driver who he had collided with which caused his lights to go out before the collision with the victim.

He said he ran off as he had no idea what to do.

The victim spent 12 days in intensive care a total of four weeks in hospital.

In a statement, the victim's mum said her daughter may recover from her physical injuries but the psychological damage will be very difficult to repair.

She said her daughter can no longer sleep properly at night, adding: "She will wake up screaming saying, 'The monsters are coming'."

King pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

He has previous convictions for multiple burglaries, as well as robbery, theft, aggravated vehicle taking, arson, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

Stephen Welford, mitigating, said his client's best mitigation was his guilty plea.

He also said King became a father a couple of months before the accident.

King was jailed for three years and disqualified from driving for four-and-a-half years.
