Biker, 70, airlifted to hospital after crash with car in County Durham

A motorcyclist has been flown to hospital after a crash with a car in rural County Durham.

The 70-year-old man was riding a Suzuki GSF 650 on the eastbound side of the A689, near the Cumbrian border, when he was involved in a collision with a silver Volkswagen Passat travelling in the opposite direction.

He sustained serious injuries in the collision, which happened at 3.40pm on Wednesday, around half-a-mile west of Killhope Lead Mine.

The biker had to be airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

The male driver of the Passat and his three passengers suffered minor injuries.

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has any dashcam footage of the vehicles in the lead up to the incident, is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 257 of May 22.
