Bike vs black cab video of London crash sparks debate over who is at fault

A video of the moment a cyclist was knocked to the ground by a cab driver after attempting to undertake him has ignited an internet debate over who was at fault.

The cyclist is seen attempting to pass the left-turning taxi on Edgware Road in London, at which point the vehicle hits the man on the side of the leg and knocks him off the bike. The cyclist then dusts himself off and shakes the driver’s hand before continuing his journey.

YouTube users have been arguing over who was to blame for the collision, with some saying the driver signalled late and should have checked their wing mirror.

Others have argued that the cyclist should not have tried to undertake a turning car. John Ledi wrote: "Both at fault, undertaking is illegal, and the driver did not check his mirror."

Daz Lin, who filmed the video on his helmet camera as he cycled behind the victim in May 2015 and uploaded it on 22 November, said it was "a scary moment" from his morning commute that "could have ended a lot worse".

"Nobody seemed hurt and both parties dealt with the situation… with a handshake."

He added the warning: "Cyclists and drivers lookout for each other on the road!"

Cycling in London has been the subject of an ongoing debate for months, with arguments made that cyclists should be able to skip red lights as well as for safer cycling paths.
