'Bike Un Ai Rak' lures over 85,000

More than 80,000 people have registered to join the "Bike Un Ai Rak" cycling event initiated by His Majesty the King, according to the Interior Ministry.

People can register online and at town halls and district offices in Bangkok and other provinces. As of Tuesday, more than 55,000 registrations had been lodged in the provinces and over 30,000 in Bangkok, said Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda.

The cycling trip will take place on Dec 9 across the country. The King will lead the event by pedalling from the Royal Plaza to Lad Pho Park in Phra Pradaeng district of Samut Prakan province. The round trip covers 39 kilometres.

Gen Anupong said on Tuesday registrations at government offices can be made during office hours but not at weekends. However, weekend registration will be available closer to the date.

He said the government expects a larger turnout than in previous events and that routes through the provinces are being worked out.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Tuesday the activity has been organised to pay tribute to His Majesty the King and promote healthy exercise.

City Hall said it will improve road surfaces for the event.
