Dockless bike-sharing service giant Ofo has logged thousands of transactions in its first few days at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi.
Beijing-based bike-sharing company Ofo is betting that universities can serve as springboards to popularise its service in the country.
The company collaborated with Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi to launch an intelligent bike-sharing service for its students a few days ago, ahead of the 45th University Sports of Thailand Games 2018, which the university will host from Jan 22-31, 2018.
Ofo's bike-sharing service started in Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi's Khlong Hok area (which comprises some 284 acres) and the school's Mueang Ek area (which covers 39 acres), each of which enrols more than 20,000 students.
These centres' large areas and abundant student populations were the two criteria that attracted Ofo.
Rajamangala University is contributing to the joint project by funding a campus bicycle club, promoting the use of bikes instead of motorcycles, and advocating for eco-friendly transportation.
"The service has only run at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi for a few days, but we are already logging thousands of transactions," said Noppol Toochinda, Ofo Thailand's general manager.
Ofo is keen on familiarising students with its services before the 45th University Sports of Thailand Games 2018, which will bring together thousands of students from all over the country.
"Bikes can be tracked and unlocked easily by scanning a QR code through Ofo's free application," said Mr Noppol. The service will be free of charge for the rest of the year.
