A bike chain has allegedly been used as a would-be murder weapon in a random attack on an inner-Sydney street.

The man, 26, was set upon by a stranger wielding a chain in Surry Hills on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

After freeing himself, he was assaulted before his aggressor left the scene, allowing the man to seek help from paramedics.

The 26-year-old was then treated in hospital as police established a crime scene and began investigating the attack.

On Thursday evening, they arrested Michael Charles Jarvis and charged him with stalking and intimidation, assault and attempted murder.

Police said Jarvis, 35, intended to strangle the man with the bike chain and his assault caused actual bodily harm.

After spending the night in police cells, Jarvis did not appear on screen when his case was mentioned in a bail division court on Friday morning.

His lawyer made no bid for bail on his behalf.

The magistrate ordered prosecutors to serve the brief of evidence by May 6, when the case returns to court.

Jarvis, who was not required to enter a plea, was remanded in custody until that time.

He can make a bail application in the interim.
