Bihar: 'Viral video' brings two-year-old gang rape case to light in Gopalganj

PATNA: A recently-circulated video has brought to light a two-year-old gang rape case in Bihar's Gopalganj district after one of the accused allegedly leaked it after knowing that the victim was going to get married soon.

As per the police, the accused youths have been identified as Abhishek Sharma, Dipu Dubey, Nitesh Dubey, Lalu Thakur and Lalji Sharma, all aged between 20 to 25 years.

Police said Lalu and Lalji shifted abroad in the meantime and are presently working in a country in the Middle East.

Police said that the rape video was leaked by Abhishek who was in a relationship with the girl.

Police said that the victim was hardly 16-year-old when the incident took during Chhath at a village under Kateya police station area.

A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed by Gopalganj superintendent of police (SP) Anand Kumar to nab the three accused still hiding in the state.

The SP said that an FIR in connection with the incident was registered with the Kateya police station against the five youths on Monday on the basis of the girl’s written complaint.

“The SIT would nab the three accused as soon as possible who were in Gopalganj but fled soon after they got to know that the matter had reached police,” he added.

“The remaining four accused caught the couple in an objectionable situation and raped her taking advantage of the circumstances. The girl chose to remain silent and didn’t approach the police,” he said.

He said the girl was going to get married but Abhishek was blackmailing her to marry him instead.

“The girl ignored him. He then leaked the video with a motive to get her marriage cancelled.

Infuriated after coming to know about her viral video, the girl went to Abhishek’s house and told him that she is going to approach the police,” he said.

The girl then lodged an FIR against the five accused, including Abhishek.

“Her act of going to Abhishek’s house alerted the other accused after which they fled,” he said.

Police said arrest of two working abroad will take time as they need to be deported to India first.

“The SP will write to state police headquarters against them from where the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will be informed. The Ministry of External Affairs will be contacted thereafter. Our embassy in the concerned country will be informed who will further contact the government in that country for the duo’s deportation to India,” he said.

(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
