Bihar: Villagers forcibly marry off young couple in Begusarai

BEGUSARAI: A young couple, who was caught secretly meeting at Shankarpura village under Hasanpur police station of Samastipur district, was forcibly married off by the villagers on Wednesday night. They allegedly thrashed Pappu before marrying him off to the girl, Karisma, at a Shiva temple, police said.

According to police, a video of their marriage being solemnized was also posted on social media in which a crowd of villagers, including women, is seen participating in the ceremony. The family members of the girl claimed that Pappu gave his consent for the marriage. He had met Karisma during a recent visit to Hargiridham Shiva temple under Garhpura police station of Begusarai and both fell in love instantly. Karishma's father works as a labourer outside the state and she has been living with his uncle and aunt at Shankarpura village.

On getting information about his son's marriage, Pappu's father and sarpanch of Ekamba panchayat under Chhaurahi police outpost, Tetar Sahni, lodged a complaint with the Hasanpur PS in Samastipur district as well as Chhaurahi police station in Begusarai district. He was reportedly camping with his supporters in Shankarpura village alleging that his son was forced to marry the girl.

Meanwhile, Chhaurahi PS SHO Raghvendra Kumar said that the case pertains to Hasanpur PS. When a Hasanpur police team went to quiz the girl and the boy, people of Shankarpura didn't allow them to do so.
