Bihar: Vigilance raids on Saharsa jail superintendent yield crores

PATNA: Sleuths of the Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) on Friday raided various locations of Saharsa jail superintendent Suresh Choudhary and recovered documents related to 15 land deeds in which over Rs 3 crore had been invested. Cash amounting to Rs 10 lakh was also recovered from the drawers in his office. The SVU sleuths also gathered information on investment in benami property made by Choudhary near the Indo-Nepal border.

After the registration of a disproportionate assets (DA) case against Choudhary, searches were conducted in his office and residence in Saharsa as well as his native place in Muzaffarpur on Friday. “Assets over four times of his known sources of income have been unearthed so far. The amount is expected to increase,” SVU ADGP Nayyar Hasnain Khan said.

As per a press release released by the SVU, Choudhary maintained an expensive lifestyle. He owned two three-storey houses. One of his houses had all the luxury items.

Choudhary had bank deposits of Rs 20 lakh in two public sector banks in Muzaffarpur. “He has made majority of the investment in land and 15 deeds were seized related to investments in Muzaffarpur, Motipur and Hajipur. Apart from this, Choudhary and his relatives have more than 38 bank accounts and several fixed deposits,” read the official statement.

Choudhary, who is supposed to retire this month, had not withdrawn his salary for the past one year. He has four children, including a daughter who is studying in a private medical college. Choudhary had allegedly paid Rs 15 lakh to secure his daughter’s admission. Jewellery in huge quantity was also recovered in the raids.
