Three men have been arrested in Patna for allegedly renting out their bank accounts to cyber fraudsters, enabling an interstate cybercrime syndicate to route money linked to multiple online fraud cases through the accounts, as per an India Today report.
The accused, identified as Prabhakar, Amit and Deepak, allegedly received between Rs 3,000 and Rs 5,000 for every transaction processed through their bank accounts. Police said transactions worth around Rs 25 crore had passed through the accounts.
Two accused worked as Rapido bike-taxi riders
Two of the arrested men work as bike-taxi riders for Rapido, while the third was also allegedly involved in renting bank accounts to members of the cyber fraud network.
According to police, the accounts were used by an interstate cybercrime syndicate to receive and transfer money obtained through online fraud. India Today reported.
DSP Sangita Kumari, who is in charge of the Cyber Police Station in Patna, said cybercrime complaints against the three men had been registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) by victims from several states.
Police arrest accused in Patna and Buxar
Police arrested two of the accused in Patna, while the third was apprehended from Bihar's Buxar district.
Investigators are now working to identify the wider network allegedly operating behind the transactions and trace the individuals who are suspected of using the rented accounts to move money obtained through cyber fraud.
Probe underway into wider bank account network
Police are also examining how many other people may have rented their bank accounts to the suspected syndicate and determining the roles they allegedly played in the fraud network.
The investigation is continuing as authorities seek to trace the larger network connected to the transactions.
