Bihar: Lalu Prasad authorised to name RJD nominees for Rajya Sabha, council polls

PATNA: RJD’s state parliamentary board and the central parliamentary board on Tuesday authorised party chief Lalu Prasad to finalise the party candidates for the forthcoming biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha and Bihar Vidhan Parishad.

While election to five Rajya Sabha seats in Bihar is going to be held on June 10, the Election Commission is expected to soon announce the schedule for election to seven Bihar Vidhan Parishad seats. The seven MLCs retiring on July 21 this year includes Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) president and former minister Mukesh Sahani. These members were elected from the Vidhan Sabha constituencies.

“The meeting, presided over by state parliamentary board chairman and former minister Awadh Bihari Choudhary, unanimously passed a resolution to authorise the party’s national president, Lalu Prasad, to select the candidates for the forthcoming biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha and the Vidhan Parishad,” RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan told TOI on Tuesday.

Soon after the state parliamentary board meeting, another meeting of RJD central parliamentary board was held at the same venue. RJD’s national vice-president and former CM Rabri Devi presided over the second meeting.

“The central parliamentary board approved the resolution of the state parliamentary board,” Gagan said. It is for the first time in the 25-year-long history of the RJD that a meeting of its state and central parliamentary boards was held at the party headquarters. Earlier, such meetings used to be organized at Rabri’s residence at 10, Circular Road.

“Whenever Lalu ji remained in Patna, he used to call the meeting of parliamentary board at Rabri’s residence. Even in his absence, such meetings were held at the 10, Circular Road bungalow. It is a good sign that the party leadership is now recognizing the importance of the organization and its office,” a senior RJD leader, who didn’t want to be identified, said.
