Bihar govt issues notification for release of don-turned-politician Anand Mohan from jail

PATNA: The state government on Monday issued a notification ordering the release from the various jails former MP Anand Mohan Singh, Awadhesh Mandal (husband of former minister Bima Bharti) and 25 others, as they have completed 14 year-prison term and the period of remission.

The state government issued the notification on Monday, after the Rajya Dandadesh Parihar Parishad (RDPP) recommended their release at its meeting held on April 20, the relevant notification said.

The notification has also asked the jail superintendents concerned to have a relook at their papers to see that they fulfill all the conditions warranting their release. Only after this relook would they be released.

The case of Anand Mohan Singh (75), convicted in the murder of the then Gopalganj DM G Krishnaiah on the outskirts of Muzaffarpur in 1994, took a controversial turn recently, after the government brought an amendment in the Bihar Police Manual. Anand Mohan is incarcerated in the Saharsa jail.

Incidentally, Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief and former UP CM Mayawati criticised the Bihar government for bringing about the amendment to facilitate the release of Anand Mohan Singh, as the slain DM was a dalit who belonged to Andhra Pradesh (present Telangana).

Over and above Anand Mohan Singh and Awadesh Mandal (42, lodged in Bhagalpur central jail) those to be released include convicts who are in the age-group of 37 to 82 years.
