Bihar CM Nitish Kumar inaugurates 65 three-storey houses for MLAs in Patna

PATNA: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Wednesday inaugurated a set of 65 newly built three-storey houses for the members of legislative assembly (MLAs) at the sprawling legislators’ residential premises on Beer Chand Patel Road in Patna during an event organised by the building construction department (BCD).

Flanked by the Bihar Vidhan Sabha speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary, deputy speaker Maheshwar Hazari, finance minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and the BCD minister Ashok Choudhary, the CM also handed over symbolic keys of the eight newly allotted houses to the 8 MLAs.

While inspecting the newly built houses, the CM asked the BCD officials to maintain cleanliness in the premises and expedite the construction of the rest 178 three-storey houses for the MLAs and 20 duplex houses for the MLCs.

Talking to media persons after the event, the CM said his government decided to build new houses for the MLAs and MLCs in 2011. Suggestions were sought from all the legislators in 2012-13 on what type of houses should be built for the legislators. But the construction work was delayed due to various reasons, he said.

“As Bihar has 243 members in its legislative assembly and 75 in the legislative council, the state government decided to build a total of 243 three storey houses on the Beer Chand Patel Path for the MLAs and 75 duplex bungalows on the Atal Path for the MLCs. A set of 55 duplex houses for the MLCs were inaugurated by the CM in 2019. While a set of 65 three storey houses for MLAs were inaugurated today. The construction works of the remaining 178 houses for the MLAs and 20 for the MLCs are in progress,” a BCD official told TOI on Wednesday.

“The cost of construction of each three-storey house, having a total built up area of 3,693 square feet, is an average Rs 93.5 lakh. Each house has been built up in an area of 3,050 square feet. A total sum of Rs 71.5 crore was spent on the construction of 65 houses, development of its premises, construction of its boundary wall and internal roads etc,” the BDC official said.

Each three-storey house has been provided two air-conditioners, four double beds, two sofa sets, one dining table and office’s stationeries and other essential items, the official said.
