Bigtime boxing set for Nottingham again as Leigh Wood tipped to headline Sky Sports show

Leigh Wood could be set to fulfil a lifelong ambition of headlining a major show in Nottingham with Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn planning to bring bigtime boxing back to the city.

The featherweight could be set to defend his commonwealth title on May 10 as part of the NXTGen series which would be televised on Sky Sports.

Ryan Doyle is being earmarked as a potential opponent for Wood, who secured the Commonwealth title with a third-round stoppage of Abraham Bonsu earlier this month.

With Wood having claimed what is  a significant domestic belt and now being managed by Dave Coldwell, there are plans to help the talented fighter  raise his profile.

As part of those plans, Hearn is now said to be planning on the biggest show to be staged in Nottingham since Carl Froch beat Lucian Bute six years ago to secure the IBF title.

Talented welterweight Ekow Essuman could feature on the same night having taken his record to 10-0 with a points victory over Tyrone Nurse as he retained his English title last weekend.

Essuman had been promoted by Frank Warren but has since split from that contract and is now a free agent meaning he would be able to appear on a Matchroom event.
